Excerpt from the Irony of Ameri~ Reinhold Niebuhr

Nothing that is worth doing
can be achieved in our lifetime;
therefore, we must be saved by
hope.
Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense
in
any immediate context of history;
therefore, we must be saved by
faith.
Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished
alone;
therefore we are saved by love.

Karl Paul Reinhold Niebuhr (June 21, 1892June 1, 1971) was an American theologian. A Protestant, he is best known for his study of the task of relating the Christian faith to the realities of modern politics and diplomacy. He was an important contributor to modern "just war" thinking.
