Furniture

A sale of 4 big pieces of office furniture I didn’t like should still be making me happy, but elation disappears fast these days. But the IKEA monstrosities are gone, thank goodness. They were pressed wood and one tall cabinet was so heavy that if I were moving out, I would’ve had to take it completely apart, which because of their elaborate construction, is a real pain.

The man who wanted them (all the pieces match, and were a nice color) moved them all by himself into a truck — no taking apart anything, either. Amazing. (He’s no spring chicken, either. Why is it men don’t worry about injuring themselves?) Now I still have all kinds of stuff that is sitting on the floor in each room that I took out of the cabinets, bookcase, file drawer. To hold this stuff I’m bringing old pine shelving (also Ikea, but real wood) up from the basement and will paint it. These shelves can come apart easily and can fit in my car. Also they weigh about a million pounds less.

The guy is still interested in buying a table and possibly another tall bookcase. This is great! So much furniture will be leaving. My house has held the remnants of two sizable apartments and two old workshop/offices, also big. I really don’t know how so much furniture was crammed in here. My storage units still hold a lot of the wood shelving parts, though.

In my back room I made myself actually see what was there. You sort of blind yourself to things you don’t want to deal with. And yes, I should get rid of the enormous CRT monitor sitting on the table. If I could move it. When it was bought, the total weight of the closed box was 98 pounds. I’ve never seen a larger one.

Maybe by the middle of summer, I’ll have reduced my surroundings to a level I like. I dream someday of living in a tiny cabin with hardly any furniture. Like an Eskimo: Everything's handy and there isn't much, they turn around and grab their spear off the wall, then turn back around and there’s their snow bed, and next to that, the front door. They’re ready to go out and hunt breakfast.

I am not impressed with tiny. Where would I put my grand piano (6 ft-2 in.)? Besides, I like to spend time in different rooms. I could easily live in a 30 room house and taste a room a day. I can still spend time outdoors. Having indoor options doesn't interfere with that.

The movie The Piano, with Holly Hunter and what's his name, Harvey Keitel, popped into my head as I pictured the size of your piano. Don't pianos have to be kept pretty dry, too?

A one bedroom apartment was too small for me when I was single but our five bedroom, full basement house is getting to be a bit much lately.

Yes, I dream of not having so much to clean and organize.

I have too much stuff and it seems to me to be draining. I couldn't go for a tiny house or an Eskimo one because I need space to roam around in
and to get away from other family members including dogs.

Eskimo dogs have to sleep either outside or in the tunnel.

I couldn't live in a tiny house. A fifth-wheel, maybe if I was in a location where I spent most of my time outside. I though I was the only one who missed something. But maybe not.

Well, you already live out in the country, which is half of what I envy.

The tiny houses idea is a big deal around here, Tumbleweed is in Colo Springs. https://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/

To me they are like a better built recreational trailer house. When I was trying to decide what to do with my flood-damaged cabin I looked at buying one of those big fifth wheel trailers and parking it on that lot to rent out. But I think there would be a lot of wear and tear from running renters through there because so much of those recreational things are made of plastic. A tiny house would be better built of more durable components, but the cost is relatively high and it was always going to be a tiny house - wouldn't grow up to be a small house someday where there would be more of it to love. So I decided to put the money into a moderate house. However, if I suddenly came into $35,000 - $80,000 I would consider buying one to use as a rental here on our mountain property because I think people would enjoy trying it out for a short stay.

Oh, yes, I've looked at tiny house sales sites a lot, but here I think zoning is still a problem unless there's already a regular house on the lot. There might be rented land available, though. But a cabin (like ones you have) seems ideal to me.

" Why is it men don’t worry about injuring themselves?" Because we know you women fall for it every time and will take care of us if we do!!! (Plus we are showoffs at all ages!)

About 7 years ago I went on a 'clean out' everything binge--I can now roller skate in my place if I want to!!
