Old Ipad

Sometimes older tech gets a second life. I own a 1st generation iPad, which is very heavy and so old it can no longer update the apps I had on it -- not even Skype. It stopped being able to play videos, either, because it needed a current version of Flash.

So all I used the ipad for was music, and some Ambience white-noise clips I like to use sometimes for getting to sleep. I was thinking hard about selling it.

But now Youtube videos are not in Flash anymore; they use html5. So my old ipad can play them again -- it's functional!

Steve Jobs hated Flash so much, and was so insistent he wouldn't have Apple use it, that at least this major site has taken the same direction. Still, I find I can't load CNN or HuffingtonPost, whose videos seem to be flash; also those sites' mobile versions are hard to load.

Everything you wrote was Sanskrit. I applaud your technical acumen. My friends are beating me up to get a smart phone. I'll probably do it and piggy back on my husband's plan. See future Greasy post on angst over confusion having to do with smart phone.

Yes, ever since I was reminded that dumb phones -- even without a current phone plan -- will still work to call 911 as long as they're charged, I bristled about having to pay for a smartphone. But at least a smartphone gives you a backup internet connection in case your home internet goes down (or the computer is in a coma).

I'd noticed YouTube was running better for me on my Mac, maybe that's why, good to know.

Yes, I guess over time the quality of videos improved astronomically. It helps to have the owner have a massive financial interest in the video ads.

It is nice to be able to use something one once thought useless. You are getting some good out of it again.

I spoke a bit too soon, it has trouble loading bigger sites and often crashes. Things like quirk.tv, with a limited number of videos, will run.
