  18 Rules

My daughter Cassidy, who turns 32 today, found a little thing that I wrote for her on the occasion of her 18th birthday called Eighteen Rules for Your Eighteenth Birthday.

Worry about learning/ Don't worry about school
Worry about quality/ Don't worry about quantity
Worry about what you can affect/ Don't worry about things you can't control
Worry about sameness/ Don't worry about change
Worry about perennials/ Don't worry about annuals
Worry about understanding/ Don't worry about asking questions
Worry about substance/ Don't worry about appearance
Worry about cats/ Don't worry about dogs
Worry about old reliables/ Don't worry about passing fancies
Worry about safety/ Don't worry about speed
Worry about falsehood/ Don't worry about truth
Worry about vocabulary/ Don't worry about voice
Worry about growing/ Don't worry about aging
Worry about song/ Don't worry about noise
Worry about who you are/ Don't worry about how you look
Worry about family/ Don't worry about strangers
Worry about being too serious/ Don't worry about laughing
Worry about doing your best/ Don't worry about how you do
...and remember that I love you.
Papa

Remember that alleged graduation speech attributed to what's his name, the sci-fi, oops no longer sci-fi, now I'm whatever Kurt Vonnegutt himself? This is every bit as profound and deserves to be spread around the country.

Some great advice there, but can't one worry about both cats and dogs?

Funny that the cat/dog one seems to have generated the most comment...

As the now 32 year old daughter, I'd like share that I certainly appreciate & love him dearly. I even saved another poem he wrote me for my 21st birthday.

Good job, your honor; and the fact that she kept it means it made an impression.

It made an impression, I'm certain, but it's still a lot to remember and apply...

'Worry about cats/ Don't worry about dogs' a JUDGE PRONOUNCING DISCRIMINATION!!!!!
If you ask me that should be reversed!
Of them all it is the "I love you" that is the most important of all

I plead guilty to being a cat person...
