  Glued to Hearth & Home

I'm going to be stuck in the house all week, except for Wednesday. I'll be waiting for the exterminator and the cable guy, except for Wednesday. The only times I'll be allowed out will be to do things I don't want to do, like babysitting and delivering newspapers, except for Wednesday. You read about why the exterminator is coming in my last blog. Now I'll tell you why the cable guy is coming. Due to the vast savings, we had our phone transfered from Telus to Shaw. (Hey telus, go stick your $5.00 fee, for absolutely nothing, where the sun don't shine.) As a little bonus Shaw offered us a years worth of digital cable for a reduced price. We thought, "Cool, it's on sale." and said, "OK." So Friday the cable guy came out and installed the digital cable box. Just before he left he handed me my new remote contol and within 2 seconds had explained how it worked. Then he said, "OK?" and I said, "Not really but I guess I'll figure it out." Today was a busy day for me and I wasn't going to be able to relax and watch my favourite shows so I tried to set my VCR to tape five hours of programming but I couldn't get it to work properly so I phoned Shaw and the nice lady put me through to a technician who told me I had to set the VCR to tape only channel 3 and set the cable box to the channel I wanted to tape. That's nice but what if I want to tape 2 shows that are on different channels (at different times) and he says, "Oh, you can't do that without being home to change the channel on the cable box." So then I asked how I'm supposed to watch one show and tape another that's on at the same time and he says, "You can't." So now the cable guy has to come back to remove the useless digital cable box. I also discovered that if the bloody box isn't turned on your VCR will tape five hours of static. Needless to say I am more than a little miffed. Oh well, there's always Wednesday but you'll have to wait until Thursday to read about that.

Well, let me tell you a drawback to dvr. Your husband records the fights
and the NASCAR stuff and it kicks whatever your watching off and it takes forever to make it go away and you have missed the best part of your show.

As Troutbend said, A DVR/PVR (think Tivo) is a like a VCR but it records on a hard drive instead of a tape. I have a Bell system, and it has an on-screen program guide that makes it really easy to record programs - either once, or it can be set to record all episodes, or only new episodes. I love it, but it does have the limitation of only one channel at a time. You can't record on one channel and watch a different channel. But you can watch a saved episode while taping.

That Shaw outfit sounds prehistoric. Our Dish Network, the regular, not the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) service had a way to set timers to change the channel to the shows you wanted so the VCR could tape them (the VCR was set to come one at the right times separately). The DVR is a hard drive that records the shows you want without the tapes.

You need a PVR or DVR and skip the whole VCR thing.

Someone needs to come up with a way to transmit all our electronic goodies without the need for a hundred wires. He would be richer than Bill Gates.

So you are going back to Shaw. It proves you have to ask a lot of questions before you make a switch like that. We switched to high speed and we do like it, but we had to get a new computer and then the really great printer we had (but old) wouldn't work with it (HP laughed at me when I called) and we had to get a new printer and Ed snarled at me because it was me who was agitating for high speed but now it is him who co-opts the computer to listen to ancient Italian tenors on You Tube all day.

Not going back to Shaw. We were already with Shaw for the computer and TV. We switched from Telus (phone service) to Shaw.
