The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost

I think I took the road less traveled- at least I think I must have when I compare my life to that of my sisters.

I often think of "the road not taken by me" due to interferance by an Aunt, why "wised" up the parents. Ha!! I was curious what the other road would have been and "googled it". Well, there was 3 daughhters on that road and I have 3 sons. After a long happy life with MY road, I will never complain. nenah

A mother interfered that affected the road I thought I was going to take.

To turn left or right at that fork in the road?? Who's to say right or wrong??

We have no way of knowing. One can only speculate how his life would have been had he taken the other road.

Have always loved this poem. It resonates with me as well. Another great one is The Rainy Day by HW Longfellow.

I love all the early American poets--Frost, Longfellow, Emerson, Thoreau.

You're right... this poem has universal appeal and makes anyone pause to reflect on roads not taken. Any top ten list of great poems would have to include this one for sure.

I never tire of it. It always gives me pause when I read it.

Yes, he could! One of, if the greatest, American poet of the 20th Century.

hmmm. It makes a person wonder about the road not taken.

It also reminds us that life is all about choice. Much of our personal pain, grief, and sorrow is directly tied to the choices we have made.

For sure.

Such a great, great poem. Every so often I go back to it just because it relates so personally to me and to every person who ever reads it. He immediately transfers it into his own memories.

This calls up all manner of thought, conjures up memories. Thanks for reminding us.

Every single person reacts to this poem according to his personal choices in life. That is what makes it such a classic....it is universal to us all.
