Three Monkeys

When Jeri mentioned recently that, during Fredo’s visit, they were going to a large flea market, she reminded me of the last time I went to such a place. It was in Central Florida, an annual coming together of hundreds of flea market purveyors and thousands of lookers and buyers. At the time, the main item I would be looking for would be “three monkeys.” That is, HEAR NO EVIL, SPEAK NO EVIL, SEE NO EVIL. I have a collection. Here’s one of my prizes, a heavy porcelain Three Monkeys:

As I wandered around this huge flea market, I encountered a woman who had set up shop and had a Three Monkeys. It was ridiculously over-priced. When I attempted to dicker with her, she refused to budge on the price. Once I saw that she was not going to negotiate (it was a flea market, after all!), I told her I was not interested and walked away.
Here’s another Three Monkeys in my collection:

A few minutes later, this beefy guy comes pushing his way through the crowd, looking for the person who had just insulted his wife. He was looking for me! He appeared enraged. Die hard Three Monkeys aficionado that I was, I decided not to jump out with my fists up. HEAR NO EVIL, SPEAK NO EVIL, SEE NO EVIL, AVOID EVIL DOERS.
I guess this fool figured that I had, in fact, spoken evil to his poor wife who was, after all, just trying to earn a few bucks. In my view, she was trying to earn a few bucks too many.

Had a set or two over the years mainly concrete one, remember one set in fibre glass, always a talking point with the younger generation

It has been many decades since I've thought of those monkeys. I remember seeing a set of them somewhere when I was a kid, but in all the huge variety of collectible (hah!) stuff around here, there aren't any (as far as I know). I could have my own flea market. Well, if I come across them, I'll send them to you so they will be among friends.

Thanks. I've probably got about a dozen or so now.

I guess her irate husband didn't find you? Who knows what story she told him.

The crowd was so big that he was never going to find me, irrespective of whatever description the wife provided.

Reminds me of the scene in Planet of The Apes in which the see-no-evil tableau is acted out by Taylor's ape judges.

Yes! I remember that scene well.

I hope she got stuck with it...

On the other hand, had you bought a monkey you would have had a weapon!

These monkeys have some good advice except for see no evil. I guess
denial is a coping skill.

A good reason not to watch TV news...
