  Battle Ready (I Hope)

Yesterday was nice; mild and sunny. Coming back from the store saw a convoy of Army vehicles. During the breaks in the weather, the National Guard has been training at Camp Shelby, located through the woods in the DeSoto National Forest. I could hear the distant "thumps" and "whumps" of artillery fire and big guns. Not the big stuff that rattles the windows, though. Helicopters flew over. The sand colored Army trucks rolled past. Our boys playing soldier, dressed in their desert camo.

I pulled off the side of the road so I could study these trucks. They have machine gun mounts on top, and look well fortified in case an IED had been planted in the road, for instance. I would love to be allowed to get into one and see how the soldiers live and work in them. It makes me wish I were young and agile and maybe I might join up--there's something--I'll say it right out--that's exciting about it and makes my old lady heart beat faster.

You can do a search on youtube and find some videos that might interest you. I'm nut sure what search words to use, since guys usually sent me links in email, but the stuff is out there!

Hi jj; I can imagine soldiers just before a battle begins (and the blood and guts stuff become reality) how the adrenaline must flow--I mean there you are in the uniform of the most powerful nation on earth, dressed in your battle clothes, armed and ready to kill, helicopters and planes overhead, and feeling invincible--there's a "high" there.
I think maybe it's a letdown to return to "normal" routine life with none of that.

I actually considered joining the navy when I was 18. But I didn't meet the height requirement. And one of the other downers, was it meant I couldn't continue with piano studies. Your old lady heart is on my wave-length. xx, T.

Hi teal; I seriously thought about joining the Navy after I got my registered nurse license--I could have gone in as a lieutenant. But it was one of those roads not taken, boo hoo.
