A Nightmare

A few days ago, my mouse and keyboard stopped working. I changed batteries in both, and no luck. Took the computer to my computer guru, Ce, and she said the ports I was using weren’t working anymore. She switched and everything seemed fine. I got the computer home but couldn’t sign into my account.

The only way I could use the computer was in a separate account without access to any of my files. I also had to have the programs I use most often, added to a blank Bookmarks list.

But I needed to be able to access my stuff, so I dragged the tower back to Ce. She worked on it off and on (she gets many interruptions all day). I was there 5 hours, amusing myself as best I could. The bottom line is that my computer is totally corrupted and the only way to fix it is to back it up, wipe it clean and start over. Or she could build me a new computer (her specialty) for $750.
Ed was not enthused about that, so I will, tomorrow, tell her to go ahead and wipe the drive and start over.

But it has been an awful day of waiting and it was tiring too. And I couldn't get anything else done.

Xx, Teal

my old laptop had that problem. My nephew Briney Sr. tried to wipe it clean and start over but it didn't work so we took the hard drive out of it, beat the shiat out of the hard drive so people couldn't get our information and out the whole mess went.

yer that'll fix it pal

And you get to give in to the rage. Works for me.

This is my nightmare too, I hope you get it fixed without paying the earth. PCs have some features that maybe are an advantage over macs -- if your computer still has the old ps ports which could attach some mouse/keybds. I would never let anyone but the manufacturer access my computer remotely. Safer to take it to a store.

My tech wiped it and reinstalled and I didn't lose my documents (whew). But I didn't have discs for Windows 13, and I reverted to an old disc for Windows 7. The wipe and install cost $135. New Word would have been over $100. I can live with 7 for now. Interesting thing is that as I use programs and bookmark them, they don't go to a list of "favorites", but are added to the overhead menu bar. I didn't use most of them anyway anymore.

It is a nightmare of the almost worst kind. I had some trouble earlier
and hope I can avoid it in the future. Hope she can identify the cause
of the trouble.

yes, and when I got home, Ed was on the phone with an Indian !!!!!, and it was another scame and he didn't see it coming. I couldn't get him off the phone. They were dealing wit his laptop (thank G, not his desk top, which I am now using till I get my computer back). When he got off the phone, I said what possessed you? When the call was done, with a request for $400, that Ed said he would pay but first he would check the phone nos. and I insisted on doing a reverse look-up, and "no inforamtion" was the result. When the guy calls back and Ed refuses to pay, I don't doubt, they';ll screw up his laptop, because he let them into it. It never ends.

That really is a nightmare, and after it happens, never seems like you are back where you started. And the worry that it could happen again, unless she was able to tell you what caused it. Good luck with it and hope you have many years of untroubled computing ahead.

Ed voted against letting my computer person build me a new laptop (her specialty) because of the cost, which really was reasonable ($750). So she is working on my computer. She said she would wipe it clean, reload, and I'd need to reload the programs I use. Word ... that's it. When I spoke with her this morning, she said she had a couple more tricks to try before starting the wipe. I am worried that I will lose all of my writing, going back 20 years and including my autobiography (that no one has seen -- nothing like being chicken s...). Anyway, at least I can use Ed's computer and get in line.

Hopefully you'll have a nice clean, if not new, computer for Christmas.

Thanks for good thoughts. I'm hoping to get all Word documents recovered. No guarantees.
