The August Rush

A year ago, hardly anyone came to stay in August, and at the start of the month, it looked like another slow August, but we've been getting a flurry of reservations.

Next Saturday the USA Pro Cycling Challenge will have a stage in this area.

The racers will go right past our gate on the main road, and I'll be up there to see them go by. It is a sprint race with a winner every day, like the Tour de France, and an overall winner at the end. It's not like an amateur race where there will be front runners and stragglers.

According to the pre-race information, the highway patrol will create a moving box of cars around the racers and the road will open up not long after they pass by. That in itself might be worth seeing.

I can't say the race has brought us more business because the people coming that weekend hadn't heard about it. At least it didn't drive them away when I told them the highway will be closed from noon to 3 pm.

As you can imagine the Chamber of Commerce and town event planners are in a frenzy.

I think they would get there faster if they used GPS and rode the bus.

That's a funny thought. In anticipation of the race, hundreds of local bicyclists have been riding that route, not in quite in packs, but close. It'd be cute if someone would organize a bus tour for those who don't ride bikes.

It will be interesting to see how it works out: will the local businesses make all that money they have been promised by the planners? Will it be worth all the congestion and problems? Will the dissenters ever get over it?

I'll be thinking of you as you watch the bikes glide by.

The people who are coming up sound like a lot of fun, so I'm looking forward to them joining me to do the watching.

I sure will. If I have enough margaritas on board, I'll be tempted to shout out: "Martin says hello."
