Declare Your Own Day

No, today is not official Pancake Day, it's supposedly February 5. At least according to IHOP. It's up to you when you want to declare a Day, and what kind of a Day to declare.

I'm declaring this I'm Going to Learn How do Paint with Oils Day.

The observance of it involves watching How To videos on YouTube.

I found this Sears catalog page from the 1950s:

I am trying to remember which of my friends had the Coca Cola dispenser. I think it was Lizzie Wolverton. Remember the real dispensers like that in the drugstore? I wonder what the supply inside was - maybe a box of the beverage, or maybe just the syrup and the fizzy water got added somewhere along the line. The toys used a bottle of pop inside, and the glasses were really small.

We never had an Easy Bake Oven, but we did have the refill like you see here, with the cake mixes, and we baked the little cakes in my mother's oven. I think they bought the set for us so we'd have the pans and things to use with our stove and cupboard set that she had someone make for us. I still have some of those little pans and cookie cutters.

Note how that kitchen set allows for real water action: fill a reservoir on the back, and water comes out the faucet, and the refrigerator light comes on. We had a battery-operated refrigerator with circular shelves that rotated when the door was opened. I wish I still had that.

And back then, that $4.98 was like $50.

I had a little stove and fridge like that when I was about 4 or 5. I loved it. they were among my favorite toys of all time.

Painting is fun and I enjoy it but I have grown to like acrylic better
because of the ease of clean up.

I bought these oil paints back in 2002 before I knew any better, so now I'm stuck with them until they're used up. If I use them up, I'll probably move to acrylics.

I love the smell of an art supply store. I get the urge to paint. Then reality sets in and I remember that I have no artistic ability, just the desire. And that is not enough, unfortunately. But the smell in the store is wonderful.

That's my situation - very latent talent, but I am determined to give it a hard try. I've discovered that there is no shame in getting the drawing to the canvas any way you can, so I'm counting on once it's there, I will have a hidden talent for slapping on the paint.

Fun sets! I always wanted an easy-bake oven. My friend got one so we used it together. We were too impatient to wait for the full time so our cake came out doughy. Thanks for the memories!

I should have posted it before Christmas so we could have asked Santa for a bake oven. But then I decided it's timely because now we're all pretend playing with our pretend gifts.

It's so easy and fun.

Jondude gave me some advice for painting on wood that I want to do and I haven't bought anything yet because I need Ed and the car to get there and he's always busy. Then there is the "where can I do this" problem because I hate packing everything away at the end of every session. The Sears catalog is great -- and look at those prices!

That's exactly my problem with the painting - where to do it.

Since my return from a long Christmas stay in Chicago, my cats have declared an extended "Sit on Mom's Lap Day" with the two of them piling on every chance they get. It is adorable, of course, and the warmest sweetest lap robe ever.

Great minds think alike. You live in such a beautiful part of the country. By next fall when the leaves change color in Colorado, I want to be ready to paint them.
