Holiday

I took this President's Day holiday to heart and stayed home today and watched free HBO etc. movies. It ends tonight, but I can spend tomorrow watching the ones I recorded, and have some left over to watch next week.

Spring is here as far as I'm concerned. The ice is melting off the river, and will not be back until next December. The dipper birds aka Ouzels are out singing and walking underwater on the bottom of the river looking for bugs. Snow is in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, but that could easily change. We get most of our snow in March and April, so that's something to look forward to.

I'm thinking about this year's garden, am giving up on trying to grow tomatoes and zucchini and other warm weather vegetables because they don't do well at this altitude, and although I enjoy watching the plants growing, ultimately there is no reward. This will be the year of flowers to attract pollinators and hummingbirds. We don't have a shortage of those birds, but it would be nice to give them more flowers to visit.

This is actually the river starting to freeze up in November, but it's so pretty I had to post it.

Laura, our family has fond memories of you and your part of the country when we were there. Much love.

It was probably longer ago than I remember, time passes so quickly. We can measure the years in the number of children you've had since we saw you, and I hope to see you all again some time.

I wonder if our weather will turn cold again too. It's in the 60s and will hit 70 degrees in a few days, before the inevitable rain. This is unnatural, it's only Feb.

Pleased to report it's snowing tonight - it's been 28 days since we had any moisture. It's been so warm that the roads are staying clear, so a good thing. I should run out there tomorrow and put weed and feed on the grass.

The sun sparkling on the water is such a nice effect.

Two record highs here too, but this time last year we had a -22F so anything is possible. Forecast is for 60s at the end of the week. A few years ago when this sort of thing happened the fruit trees began to flower early and frost killed any chance at apples that year, so warm isn't always good. To bat about the 'maters and zuch. I'll be doing both.

My uncle had peach orchards and the blossoms froze more than they didn't, so a decent crop maybe once every 3 or 4 years if they were lucky.

We are having record high temperatures--where the average should be around 77 we had 89 degrees this afternoon!

I love looking at your river starting to freeze up but I am glad I am looking at it on my computer in Fort Lauderdale and not seeing it in person!

Our humidity is so low here most of the time you wouldn't feel the cold.
