Life Rolls On

We are starting spring runoff where our river will swell to four times the usual flow. It usually lasts through June, and this is expected to be a high year. It doesn't help our fire danger: all the water goes past in the river channel, but every five years or so it can threaten some of the low-lying areas and people start talking about where can they find sand bags.

A big nest of fish hanging out near my bridge. Maybe spawning, maybe they are from a fish hatchery, stocked into the river by my downstream neighbor who owns a fishing guide service.

We got to stand near the big rock trucks. They are so large that if two of them meet on the highway, it has to be in a wide spot. This is why our highway is closed 19 hours a day, so these trucks can haul the material created by blasting away the sides of mountains.

Here is what my part of the river is looking like these days.

No I won't get upset but didn't you say you weren't building it back to its previous glory???

Really a pretty river.

It's probably more of a creek, but for some reason that's not it's name. The county south of here calls all their waterways creeks and I feel like it's presumptuous (because it's where the presumptuous people live), but if we called the ones in our county creeks, it would be okay because we'd just be being our usual down to earth selves who are loads of fun at a barbecue.

I don't remember the last time I saw or was in a real river!!

The nice thing about this one is it's not so large as to be dangerous. I miss that goose we had one summer, taking it swimming in the river. If I show you what 'your' red cabin looks like now, do you promise not to get upset?

There has been so much rain here that lavender that died during the drought is up and blooming. Hope you don't have an excess, we worry
about flooding.

Yesterday is was raining hard and reminded me of the week of our flood - we were so happy to get the moisture for the first three days, but the fourth day on wasn't so much fun. Now that we know what weather to watch out for, it'll probably be a long time before it happens again.
