Oh Woe!

The highway department wants to do another full road closure this coming winter, from October through May 2018. And this summer they plan to close the highway weeknights from 9 pm to 5 am. The current closure is 3 miles long, the next one will be 10 miles long so it will take at least an hour to wait for the line of cars to make it up and back if we miss the queue. Right now it's only 20 minutes.

People are not happy about this, especially the ones who live in a neighborhood where they are locked in at night. I could go to Las Vegas for several of those months, but I'd have to resign my positions on various flood recovery boards and committees, and I'd miss the activity and knowing what was going on.

It'll all work out, but will take awhile to get used to the idea of another winter like this one has been for getting where I need to go. Two years from now, once all the work is completed, maybe I'll look back and see it as a blip in the timeline of our lives, but it seems like the older I get and the less time I have to live, it's harder to accept things that feel like a waste of time when I could be doing something I enjoyed rather than enduring.

How frustrating but at least there is an end in sight. Our winter season getting worse each year as snowbirds and tourists come down in greater numbers. A 15-minute trip to get home sometimes takes an hour. There is only one road on and off Matlacha, where I live, and Pine Island, next to us. And there are constant efforts to strike down zoning laws that prohibit big building on Pine Island. Also Cape Coral wants to annex Matlacha. We're fighting to stay free. They would love to have our tax base.

It sounds really awful. What do you do when you are waiting in line?

I listen to audio books on my iPod.

I must have missed something in your past posts. What is the purpose of these closures? Especially overnight.

They are blasting away mountains and moving the highway away from the river. They can't blast at night, but they move dirt and rocks around and maintain the equipment.

We have to get you down to South Florida where what you describe is a way of life!! With making I-95 having a toll lane (they call it an express lane)and constant construction going on as bad as it gets in 'season' it is pretty bad the other 6 months.

It's like that, except there are no alternate routes - only one highway in a narrow canyon. At least in urban areas there are side roads and usually ways around. Out here in the west there are remote areas where a landslide or bridge going out can cause a 300 mile detour for as long as a couple of years.
