Progress on the New Cabin

Maybe one of the most exciting things about the new cabin is the septic system going in. It signals that we are toward the end of the project, even though there is still a lot to do.

I'm sorry the yard has to be dug up because there was grass there that kept the weeds down, but now the disturbed soil will turn into a weed farm and we'll spend years trying to establish the grasses again.

Here it is from the other direction.

I really like the bathroom mirror. Those are LED light bulbs, and I'm not fond of the brightness of it. I'm working on solutions to tone it down.

Mr. Troutbend made the ladder using various ideas from the Internet. He's keeping track of the value of his labor and maybe he'll expect me to pay him. Purchasing one was going to cost around $2000, so maybe his goal is to beat that price, just for the satisfaction of not spending that money.

Definitely try it out for a night or two.

We put a futon with a good mattress up in the loft, so could be done.

At least you don't have to live in it during construction!

If that'd been a remodel project, it would have felt like a permanent condition - we wouldn't know what to do with ourselves if it ever got done. I feel a little bit that way as it is.

It is so pretty...tell Gary that I love the ladder.

Thanks. I'll tell him. I never thought I'd be able to build something from scratch and feel happy about my choices. I tried to keep it really basic to keep the costs down, couldn't afford to make it look like a mountain lodge. I figure whoever lives there can accessorize however they want.

Now, is this one just for renting out? You should get to use it for a while, while it's all nice and new.

Yes, that's the one. I forget which of the workmen was telling me I need to spend the night over there some time, and I was thinking Not until there's running water.

They put a LED light fixture in my kitchen--I love it.
The red cabin looks good!

The color of the light reminds of fluorescent light, and there are some rooms where a good bright light is desirable.
